Fri 5th Jan - A Tribute to Elvis - James Ruffell and The Maybellenes, featuring the Drunkenaires - 9pm at The Hare & Hounds, Low Leighton Rd.
Sat 13th Jan - An Evening with an Adventurer - exciting stories told with warmth and humour - 7.30pm at Mellor Parish Centre, Church Lane, Mellor. Tickets £6 from Colin Hilton 01457 862203. Bar & raffle. In aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Jo and Rob Gambi are the first married couple to jointly summit the highest peak on each continent, The Seven Summits, Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Vinson, Kilimanjaro and Carstenz. They have also skied to both Poles and Jo has recently cycled some of the European Alps. They fought many hardships, but more than that Rob fought his way back from cancer twice. Come along and enjoy a wonderful audio visual evening of adventure.

Sat 27th Jan - Tiara Workshop - 10am-4pm at Liberal Hall, Hurst Lea Road Rd. £12 per person including jewellery. This brilliant workshop is run by Hazel Atkinson a very talented jewellery maker and tiara maker extraordinaire! Hazel is well known for her fun and eye stopping tiaras for pantomimes and theatre. But she is also the creative genius behind many pieces of fantastic jewellery shown on film and TV. You will use lots of different jewellery making techniques using a fabulous collection of beads, copper, and silver plated wire. Hazel will provide all the materials. In a day you could expect to make a tiara with matching earrings, or a necklace with an enormous ring. Anyone who likes making things will enjoy this tremendously creative workshop. Thur 22nd Mar - 24 Hours of Prayer - 6am Thur to 6am Fri at Providence UR Church, Mellor Rd. Open to all the community for 24 hours providing a quiet space for prayer. Prayer request slips will be available for anyone who would like others to pray for them.
There will be guided prayer every hour on the hour, and people are welcome to come and go at any time. Set around the church there will be prayer stations focussing on both world and local community issues – peace, justice and the environment, and work and leisure in New Mills, young people and children, and our community. People will find readings, thoughts and prayer prompts at each station which they are free to use as they wish. Road safety officers join forces with a child car seat experts to give free checks and advice on how to fit a child seat correctly. The initiative is part of a county-wide drive to prevent children from being injured while travelling in vehicles. Last time the exercise was carried out 76% of the seats checked failed safety test.

Fri 17th & Sat 18th Aug - Cut the Carbon March in Marple & New Mills - 7.30pm Fri 17th at St Mary’s Church Hall, Hollins Lane, Marple Bridge. Christian Aid’s ‘Cut the Carbon’ March reaches Marple on Friday evening, 17 August. Marchers will include those from much poorer countries already severely affected by climate change.  You are welcome to join them. On Saturday morning, the marchers are due to leave Marple, as far as is currently known about 9.30, on their way via Strines to New Mills, before they move on to the A6 toward Buxton.  They are likely, on present timing, to arrive in New Mills about 10.30 am. The marchers would very much value some support in New Mills – people could either join them for part of the way and/or join others lining part of the route through New Mills.  They will probably be stopping off briefly at New Mills Bus Station / Heritage Centre.

3rd Sep - 11th Nov - Memorial Exhibition - Following on from the Memorial Service held in High Lea Park on the 15th July, there will be a 'moveable' exhibition until Remembrance Sunday. It will start in the Library on Monday 3rd September, moving to the Heritage Centre on Monday 17th September and finally St George's Church during the week leading to 11th November. This exhibition will show the children's artwork, stories and poems and people's memories of the war time period. There will also be a book available for anyone to add their own memories and thoughts of this period.
To remind people of the reason for the Memorial Garden, bulbs will be planted in High Lea Park. For people wishing to contribute towards the bulbs, there will be clearly marked collecting tins in shops.
